Search is welcoming the neighbouring charity West End Befrienders (WEB) to be part of the Search family. The WEB charity provides support to older people who feel lonely or need advocacy in the west of Newcastle. It relies on volunteers to run groups or to befriend people in their own homes. The two organisations share a lot in common and it makes sense for them to be under the same roof in the Search office on Adelaide Terrace.

The move will take place on April 1 and no activities or groups are expected to experience any change.

West End Befrienders is a project which has been operating in the West End of Newcastle since 1984. The aim of the project is to provide a befriending and advocacy service to older people experiencing social isolation caused by health, language or cultural problems. It operates within the South Asian (Indian/Bangladeshi/Pakistani), Chinese and local white communities as well as in targeted Care Homes.

The work takes place in people’s homes as well in group settings and care homes. It provides exercise classes, film and reminiscence sessions, outings and help with medical appointments and shopping where appropriate.

WEB aims to improve the quality of life of older people, keep them in touch with their communities and help them engage with the world at large.

Befrienders are all local volunteers who make regular calls and act as friends to either support the people they visit in their own homes, or accompany them to access local services and facilities, such as shops or medical appointments.
